Lu works the land for survival

Life is still the same despite the changes. But it depends on how a person approaches life.

This is the belief of Lu Liona, 46, from the village of Lalomanu in Aleipata. Mr. Liona said life is still the same to him.

He mentioned the plantation is the main source of daily sustenance for their family.

“Life is still the same, but it also depends on how a person works towards trying to cope with the changes we have today,” Mr. Liona said.

“We don’t have that many people in our family; it’s just me, my brother and his wife, with their two children.”

“No one works in my family and our plantation is the only source of income at the moment.”

“I live with my brother and his family, my brother and I work on our plantation.”

Mr. Liona was returning home when he met the Village Voice team yesterday morning.

He says he enjoys working on his plantation.

“I really enjoy working on our plantation because it is something I have experience in and it’s not something you need to learn in school.”

“I have been working on our plantation for a long time and it rakes in good money because we sell all the crops to support our family.”

“So for me, I also enjoy it because I treat this as my regular job, if my brother and I don’t work, then our family will starve.”

Mr. Liona says the rainy weather also helps his plantation.

“This is the best weather for farmers like me; the rain helps with the soil and the crops.”

“So even if it rains, I don’t stay home, instead I have to come here to the plantation to do more work because this is a nice weather to work.”

Mr. Liona added nothing in life comes easy these days.

“Life is good, but there’s nothing you will earn if you don’t work or invest in something.”

“As long as we continue to work hard for our families, we will be able to address any daily struggle.”
