Our taros are bigger than yours

Suzi Sushma Kumar was waiting for her Samoan entourage (made up of her in- laws family) who were going to take her out on another holiday excursion.

She was excited to see what was in store that day.

“My son-in-law’s family is here in Samoa so we decided that we would do something different and come out this way,” she said.

“I have been to many parts of the world but I haven’t been to this Pacific Island before so it was a good idea.”

Suzi was born and raised in Fiji but has lived in Sydney for the past 40 years. She is no stranger to the islands but she still found somethings surprising.

“I think Samoa is very clean. And the best part is I have not seen any mosquitos around. I have aeroguard and I have never used it,” she said.

Size does matter. Suzie was amazed at how big some fresh produce was in the markets she visited around Apia.

“I went to the market with my son-in-law and the fruit and vegetables looked so nice and fresh. Fiji is a big population and the size of the vegetables is pretty small for example taro. When I saw the taros here they were so huge and humongous. I’ve never ever seen them like that. It was really cool.”

She also discovered a new species of banana and claimed Samoa’s coconuts the sweetest of them all.

“The red bananas, I have never seen before, it’s so nice because I ate it and it was so beautiful. And the coconut, so fresh and sweet, it’s the best coconut I ever had. I have drunk coconuts in Thailand, Vietnam and Fiji, but these coconuts were just so sweet.  I haven’t seen cassava here which is strange. Taro is amazing and the size of the avocados is amazing, same as Fiji.

Nothing escaped Suzie’s observations as she admired the many beautiful churches around town.

“I’ve seen so many churches here which are so beautiful. I’m quite religious too, I’m Hindu. I believe in God and all the beautiful religions that worship the one God. And the people are so very friendly. The beaches here are beautiful, so beautiful it’s very nice. I rang my friends and told them how beautiful it is here and they are all planning to come and see how Samoa is.”

It’s suffice to say that Suzie has had a fantastic time in Samoa singing her praises and she’s already planning her next trip here.

“I would recommend anyone to come here to Samoa. Especially in this place, the Taumeasina Island Resort. It’s a beautiful hotel. It’s amazing; it’s very nice I like it. Sitting on the balcony with the view right at the water front, you can swim anytime in the swimming pool. The whole team here is amazing, I love it. I love Samoa; I want everybody to visit here. It’s just beautiful.”
