The death of a 60-year-old father whose body was found 300 meters away from his house at Faleatiu has alarmed the Police.

Media Officer Su’a Lemamea Tiumalu yesterday said the Post Mortem revealed that the deceased was assaulted with a gun prior to his death.

But what kind of gun was used, the Police cannot confirm at this stage.

The matter was reported to the Faleolo Police post on 26 August 2016.

“It is not confirmed which type of weapon was used because only an expert can tell that,” he said.

“We are also mindful that bringing an expert is very expensive because we need to pay for his airfare, accommodation and allowance when in Samoa.

“Still, that will not stop the Ministry from getting a gun expert to do the investigation.”

He said there is no one on island qualified to handle such cases.

“Because there are many things that need to be confirmed, including the kind of weapon used, whether it was a lawful weapon or an unlawful weapon.”

Su’a said that there are only three guns allowed in Samoa. They are a 12-gauge shotgun, 16-gauge shotgun and 22 single shot rifle.

The body of the deceased had been taken to Savai’i after the Post mortem to await his final services.
