Visitors find Samoa more attractive because it’s less commercialised

David Nelson was doing what every decent man would be doing at the markets -- standing patiently out of the way, holding the shopping bags while his partner and children continued to shop for more goods on display at Savalalo.

Dear Tourist decided to help him pass the time and he was happy to tell us of his amazing experience of their holiday so far.

David is a Kiwi and his partner Sharon is from England.

On this family holiday they’ve brought along daughter Abby and her boyfriend Rich for the ride.

They were looking for a laid back holiday destination that wasn’t so commercialised.

This is their second time in Samoa.

“We could have gone to Rarotonga but it seems a bit more commercialised from what we heard, so we just like the idea of Samoa, it’s really cool,” he said.

“I just had friends who did a wedding at Sinalei and we sort of just took that from them. And we sort of stayed at the Sinalei last time and we liked Coconuts.”

With more exciting news, David continued sharing about their incredible time in Samoa.

“We have also been to Lalomanu Beach, it was really nice there. We went to the To Sua Trench yesterday and it was fantastic, so we had a little great time.

Asked if anything has changed in Samoa from his last visit, he said: “I don’t know what’s different from the first visit but just that last time when I arrived, it was raining.

“But when we got to Lalomanu Beach and we sat around there, it was really nice.”

David told the Observer how significantly better the marine sea life in Samoa was compared to what they had experienced on previous snorkelling trips during their travels to the Greek islands.

Snorkelling was never the same for him there, meaning the water might be blue there but it was a bit boring and they hardly saw any fish compared to what they saw here.

“They really should charge more… I mean for five tala a day, that’s way (sic) cheap. We were stunned by the price.”

David is looking forward to coming back and he will recommend this place to his family and friends.

“Yes, I had a great time. I mean, it’s not a thing that any European would do really, to come to Samoa, so they got to go to New Zealand  then to Samoa, you know what I mean, there’s no direct flight. But I do know that the Europeans would love to come here. This place is fantastic, and hell yeah, I will come back.”

The family are going back to New Zealand to spend another week there before they head back to England, but before they do, David and the gang are looking forward to spending a few hours at Piula Cave before heading back to their resort to start packing.
