Family reunion with a purpose

The Seiuli Lee family visited the Samoa Cancer Society yesterday morning to lend a hand by cleaning the compound.

They also donated money to help the Society.

According to the Chairman of the Committee of the Lee Family, Tuifaasisina Korina Seiuli Lee, they decided to help because of their love for family members who have lost their battles with cancer.

“This is the third time we have our family reunion here in Samoa but this is the first time we have decided to have a charitable purpose for our family gathering,” she said.

“When we were organizing our reunion, we wanted to make ours different from all the other families and to get together and have a purpose of our reunion. It is in appreciation of the work done by the Society because our family actually has a lot of family members we have lost through cancer and ones that are still fighting cancer.

“So the whole family agreed that Samoa Cancer Society will be our main focus as far as donating our time cleaning the area.”

She went on to say that they want to pave the way for other reunions and families to not only have reunions but to have a purpose.

“We would like to pave the way as a way for reunions and hopefully for other families that will make this as a very important and a must for us to help out as the CEO has mentioned the organisation is not fully funded by the government but they rely mostly on donation,” she said.

Another family member and Treasurer of the family, Joyita Purcell said that it is also a good opportunity for all of them and their children to experience what the Executive Officer of the Samoa Cancer Society Shelley Burich is actually doing and working on.

“We finally understand what this place is all about and all this time we thought that the government fully funds the society but we heard this morning that the society relies heavily on donation from people,” she said. “We also now can see the hard work that she is doing for the patients and also the country. She is a very hard working person and so we want to help out in any way we can.”
