Two cases of attempted rape have been reported to the police. 

The alleged incidents occurred at different places.

The first incident involves a 34-year-old woman from one of the villages close to the Afega Police station.

According to the Acting Assistant Commissioner, Sala’a Moananu Sale, the accused was travelling with the victim on one of the buses coming from Apia to the village.

“The victim and the accused both stay in the village,” he explained.

“They got off the bus and walked home through the same access road.

 “While they were walking the accused was probably tempted and he tried to rape the victim. He also assaulted the victim however she was able to fight him and she managed to get away.

“She then reported the matter to the police office at Afega.”

The man has since been charged with attempted rape. He is scheduled to appear in the Supreme Court on 26 June 2017.”

The second alleged rape incident occurred in one of the villages in Savai’i.

“The accused is one of the leaders in one of the denominations,” said Sala’a.

“According to police reports the accused is staying at one of the villages closed to the Vaito’omuli Police station.

“It says the victim is between the ages of 15 and 20, she was walking to the shop on that day when the accused tried to rape her.

“At the moment the police are investigating the matter and it is not yet confirmed that he is charged with attempted rape.”
