Meet Tina Toma, 35-years old from Leauva’a and Samata, Savai’i

The mother of two stays home looking after her two children while her husband goes to work. They have just moved to Leauva’a from Savai’i.

“We have just moved in with my family trying to develop on our own and to seek a better future for my children,” she said

“We are trying to clean up the land first then we will decide on our next move.”

Mrs. Toma’s husband is the breadwinner for their family.

“As of now we want to settle everything before I start looking for a job.”

“It’s hard because my husband is the only one who works for our family. Once we clear up all the area then we will start making another move for our family.”

Her family has been without electricity since they moved in.

“Luckily we have water but for electricity we haven’t received any power since we moved in a year ago.”

“In every family it is hard to live without water and electricity. We all know the importance of these two sources in our lives and we are trying to get our power connected.”

Tina agreed that the cost of living is very expensive.

 “Yes, it’s tough,” she said.

“We shouldn’t complain about it though because we all know that life moves on as well as the cost of living increasing.”

However, Tina said that otherwise life in the village is great.

“Even though we just moved in and start developing our place and we don’t earn that much money from my husband’s work, but I actually prefer this over living close to town because it’s peaceful.”

“I can just stay home and focus on simple things.”

Tina has a plan for her family for the future to make sure they earn.

“My plan is to just live this life and put my children in school so that they can have a better future not the struggle that we have today.”

“My priority is my children and family.”
