Laumei ready to tackle Sheraton to Sheraton

23 March 2018, 12:00AM

Tomorrow is shaping up to be an exciting day for the Outrigger Canoe Paddling community in Samoa.

The excitement is particularly evident for one local who is set to tackle the 33km Sheraton to Sheraton regatta.

For the first time, the Laumei Outrigger Canoe Club will field both an Open Mens and an Open Mix (two men four ladies) teams for the regatta organized by Nafanua Outrigger Canoe Club.

Laumei travelled to American Samoa and conquered the Aunu’u Island 25km Challenge last October.

Now thanks to Sheraton, Pacific Forum Line and Alopaopao Vailima Samoa; tomorrow’s 33km Regatta will be the first long-haul marathon the local clubs will be challenged to take up for 2018.

The Sheraton-to-Sheraton will see the local alova’a clubs on their 6-seater canoes race from Sheraton Hotel in Apia to Sheraton Resort Mulifanua.

Laumei Outrigger Canoe club members’ passion for the water-sport is only natural because our ancestry is of sea-faring people, why else were we coined “The Navigator Islands”. It will be Laumei OC Club’s first time to field female club members on this exciting 33km Regatta. The girls have been training hard and are eager to achieve the goal of joining other clubs whom share their love for Alova’a in competing in the Sheraton-2-Sheraton Regatta.

“Laumei OC Club wishes to thank the local business community and dedicate their efforts to all the business owners whom at heart support our Alovaa tradition by completing the Sheraton-2-Sheraton Marathon. Laumei OC Club foremost thank our Heavenly Father for His Grace, Love and Guidance that has made all the preparations mentally, physically and spiritually at ease,” the Club said in a statement.

“We acknowledge the kind support of family, friends and a special thank you to:  Special Occasions Supplies (S.O.S.), Yokohama Battery, Silverstone, Chan Mow Wholesale, H.J. Keil Minimart Moto’otua & H.K. Keil Company Taufusi for making our passion a reality through your never-ending kind support.

“We also acknowledge the continuous support throughout the years of AJ & Krissy Cowley of Farmer Joe, Enele Westerlund of Taula & S.B.C, Taimalie C Westerlund of Ah Liki Investment Group, Samoa Observer, Digicel Samoa, Apia Concrete Products, SSAB, Samoa Builder Supply and our patron Letoa W Keil of H.J. Keil Co.”

“We pray for a safe Marathon and hope to see you all down at Vaisigano Beach on Saturday afternoon as we start our journey to the west!”
