More students from Vaiala Beach School visited the Samoa Observer’s headquarters at Vaitele yesterday.

This time, the Year Eight class members were keen to put their skills in making a newspaper to the test at where Samoa’s only daily newspaper is produced.

The Year 8 visit followed that of their Year 7 peers on Wednesday.

The students, teachers and parents met with Marj Moore, Samoa Observer’s Coordinator of Newspaper in Education, Editor, Mata’afa Keni Lesa and Online Manager, Jarrett Malifa.

The students also got to see the print machine run by the Production Team.

But the highlight of yesterday’s trip for the students was having the opportunity to present their own front-page articles they had been working on.

Year 8 teacher, Annie Meredith said this was an important trip for her students.

“It’s important because it actually shows the students career opportunities,” she said. “I think it’s sort of like a mini career opportunity and we really appreciate the Samoa Observer for their support.

“We’ve studied newspapers for most of the school term and then the students’ last assignment, was to make a newspaper front cover.

“So they’ve been using the Samoa Observer as their model on how to write articles and they’ve enjoyed it.”

Annie Meredith and her students left the headquarters, happy with what they have learned and have seen.

Alexia Slaven, one of the Year 8 students said: “I think this trip was really educational and I’ve learned a lot about how to use newspapers and I’ll use this information in the future.

“And one day, I’m thinking of becoming a reporter.”
