Happiness is what counts

Money or no money, stay positive and be happy.

After all a simple life is a happy life. That’s the belief of 64-year-old Mei Si’isi’i of Fagafau Savai’i, Vailele and Letogo.

It doesn’t mean her life is challenge-free. But happiness is what matters most to her.

Mei’s family depends on their plantation mostly. Two of her children also work for a supermarket in town.

“Me and my husband are here to visit my children but we stay in Savai’i where we have our own plantation for food and money.”

The challenge for Mei in Savai’i is water.

“We have a good source of electricity but we hardly have access to water.”

The elderly mother agrees that life has become too expensive. But it doesn’t have to be if you don’t want an expensive life.

Mei reminds herself that God blesses the hands that work.

“You know in this life without hard work and struggles, we wouldn’t know what life has in store for us.

“We have land to work with and grow whatever we want.”

Mei also spoke about the difference between life in Savai’i and Upolu.

“Our village in Savai’i is still under the guidance of matai and faipule but here people are free to do everything and anything they want.

“We also have curfew at night time where we get to do family evening service but here that doesn’t happen.”

Mei prefers her children to be raised up in Savai’i.

But she also understands there are more opportunities in Upolu.
