The way out of hardship

More work, less talk is the only way to cope with daily challenges.

So says 61-year-old father, Faumuina Muti, from the village of Levi-Sale’imoa.

He said life is already hard in Samoa and it will be harder if we don’t work.

“We all know that life in Samoa is going forward and it is getting hard at the same time.”

Mr. Muti said only one person in his family worked.

“Only one person in our family works and our other relatives in overseas help us financially as well.

“I am also supporting my family as well through my plantation; this is where our food comes.

“I also support them with fishing, providing fish for food in order to support my family.”

Mr. Muti also mentioned that he enjoys so much of his work.

“I really enjoy the work I put in for my family because that’s the role of a father to his house, is to support and provide.

“I also enjoy the work I do because it is part of my exercise routine to get my body moving and to be active all the time.”

Mr. Muti said he also faced some obstacles in life.

“I think the most dangerous problem to our family is the fact we are closing in the cyclone season, and storm surges are not looking good.

“Our house is so vulnerable to storm surges because we are just right opposite the sea and it is dangerous for us.

“I just hope that there will be no cyclone this year because we are not ready and our house is definitely not in a good condition.”

Mr. Muti says we must work the land and the sea is there to provide sustenance.
