Youth of Savai’i reaped the benefits of the seeds sown at the Samoa National Youth Council run market held last week at the Apita O Pisaga Hall, reflecting the theme “The road to 2030: Eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable production or consumption”.
Youth displayed their wares for the business and local community on the market day, including food products created using new recipes learnt during the previous day’s workshop, of guacamole, eggplant pineapple salsa and pickled cucumber.
Other products displayed and on offer during the market day included carved wooden traditional outrigger canoes, cow leather belts, stencils and printing services, fresh produce, and lava lavas.
Kennon Kincaid, Political Economic Officer on behalf of the U.S. Embassy Charge de Affaires, Angelina Wilkinson, made the keynote speech at the opening of the market day, which was fully supported and funded by the United States of America Embassy Small Grants Program.
During his speech, he indicated his eagerness to explore the market, meet the youth, hear from them about their experiences, learning and hopes for their future.
Savai’i businesses also attended the market day to investigate the potential business development opportunities with the youth workshop participants, including:

Some of Samoa National Youth Council’s strategic goals are creating income-earning opportunities and employment for youth, and building the capacity of youth through innovative and responsible programs. The two-day workshop and market provided an excellent opportunity to do this.
Youth benefited from the workshop and market objectives, in that it provided an important opportunity for Savai’i youth to have an enhanced awareness and understanding social entrepreneurship, to be up-skilled in the cultural and creative industries, have strengthened engagement in small business initiatives, and for mentoring and knowledge sharing with the private sector.
