Locals have celebrated Christmas at Tafitoala, Safata, with the annual “Pisapisaō” programme.

The annual event, started by Catechist (pastor) Mikaele Taofinu’u, saw more than a hundred people flock to Tafitoala Catholic Church.

According to Catechist Taofinu’u, in the Samoan culture, when a taupou (ceremonial hostess) was getting ready to perform, the untitled men would yell, scream and shout, letting the people know the taupou was about to begin. 

“We should do the same to welcome the birth of Jesus Christ,” he said.  “We should yell, scream and shout, letting the world know that Jesus is coming.” 

The yearly event was always looked forward to by his Sunday School and all the Church’s youth, among others.

“It’s one of the most enjoyable programmes I have put together to restore the spirit of Christmas, not only for this village but also for Samoa.”  The children perform Christmas carols and traditional skits for the festive commemoration. 

A representative of the congregation, Motu Malagamalii Eli, said the programme was a great way to celebrate Christmas within the village. 

Motu said this year’s event would be their last gathering with their Catechist, and he thanked him for everything. 

Catechist Taofinu’u has been serving at Tafitoala for six years, and this year marks the end of his time there. He said the programme this year was more like a farewell for him and his family to their congregation and the village. 

He is hoping that his successor will continue the programme for the children next Christmas. 

Catechist Mikaele Taofinu’u and his wife Talilagi Taofinu’u have been appointed to serve at Lona Fagaloa Catholic Church for the next six years.
