After 25 years as the largest private sector employer in Samoa, Yazaki has closed its operations.
It has begun a period of transition in which they have dedicated themselves to supporting and providing opportunities for their staff to receive the appropriate training needed to re-enter the workforce.
Earlier this week, Yazaki hosted the Samoa Chamber of Commerce September Members Meeting at the Hotel Elisa Conference Room in Sogi.
General Manager, Funefeai Oliva Vaai, and Assistant Human Resources Manager, Papali’i Tate Simi, gave a special presentation on the company’s transition strategy.
“As of next week, approximately 270 former employees of Yazaki will be employed full time,” Funefeai said.
He hailed this as a success and also acknowledged those present as well as other private sector organizations for the support Yazaki has received in making this possible.
Asked whether the selection of trainings was a top down approach, Funefeai responded, that through a survey, the members themselves selected the types of training they were interested in undertaking.
Chair of the Meeting, Tupa’i Klaus Stunzner, said: “It was great to understand what Yazaki has done to take care of their employees.”
He also recognized the value of the knowledge shared to businesses who would endeavour to transition in the same way.
Three new members were introduced and they were Asi Bed and Breakfast, Pick-a-box and Samoa Meat Supplies.
The Samoa Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc. as the National Private Sector Organisation (NPSO) is funded by the Pacific Leadership Program (P.L.P).
