The family of a young man from Vaigaga is in mourning after an incident where he drowned at Mulinu’u on Sunday.

The Samoa Observer was told that the young man had gone with a group of friends when the incident happened.

The family was too upset when the Samoa Observer attempted to get a comment.

But a man who spoke on the condition of anonymity said everyone is in shock because they did not expect such a tragedy to happen.

“I think people are still trying to come to terms with what has happened,” he said.

“We are absolutely devastated. We never thought in a million years that this could happen at all. We are gutted.”

According to the close friend, the deceased was with his friends. They were enjoying a good Sunday afternoon when he decided to go for a swim.

“I don’t know what exactly happened while he was swimming but they couldn’t save him.”

The matter, he said, is being handled by the Police.

It was not possible to get a comment from the Police yesterday.

But a health official confirmed that the young man had bruises on his back and on his hands.

The deceased was pronounced dead upon arrival at the National Hospital.
