Senetenari tells of his struggles

“I’m a human being and I need water; it’s as simple as that.”

So says 36-year-old Senetenari Fa’alelei of Fasito’o and Sapapali’i Savai’i.

Speaking to the Village Voice, Senetenari said having no water makes everything else seems useless.

“For me I don’t mind when I don’t have food,” he tells Village Voice.

“If I have my own water for a cup of tea everyday then that’s more than enough for me because at least I have water.

“I wish my life was that simple when it comes to this ‘getting water situation’ but too bad it’s not.

“I’ve lived here for twenty years and that’s how long I have struggled to fetch water from the inner village.

“Right now, I only have a gallon to store water from the rain if God blesses us with a rainy weather.

“But everyday I fetch water from some of my families in the inner village.

“It’s a good thing I don’t have a family of my own right now because just imagining myself with a wife and kids, I’d probably do my best to get water every single hour of the day just so we can have enough.

“Water is my life and it’s your life and without it, we suffer because our bodies need it.

“I’m a farmer; I go to the plantation in the morning and in the evening time.

“I sell coconuts and bananas to get money so my way of making a living is already hard as it is but at least it’s something I chose to do it for myself so I can survive.

“I can do something about that situation but having no water, it’s a big struggle for me and it’s something that’s making my life really difficult and I need help.”
