Special Olympics unite all abilities

More than 700 students took part in the Special Olympics Samoa Unified Sports Day at Marist Primary School on Thursday.

The memorable day used sports to bring people, with and without intellectual disabilities, together in a fun and informal way.

The idea is that training and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding - breaking down stereotypes, empowering and engaging with individuals through the power of sports and the promotion of an inclusive society.

It was also part of Special Olympic Samoa’s preparations for the National Games in October.

National Director of the SO Samoa, Tusitina Nu’uvali, said the day was hugely successful and they would be looking to make it an annual event.

“What we are trying to do is to spread the message and raise awareness to gather support for our SO Samoa Athletes.

“We got our athletes here that are below 20 years of age. These are our athletes we are training to become future leaders.”

“It’s all about bringing everyone together with all abilities. Special Olympics is about using sports as a tool to recognise and not to discriminate against anyone.”
