Alafua Uta road now open
Alafua Uta residents’ impassable road in Apia which they took upon themselves to fix is now officially open.
The newly concreted road was officially opened by Rev. Mikaele Fonoti of Vaimoso when he cut ribbons at the site of the road project.
The road was funded by contribution in cash and kind by residents of Alafua Uta after the community was turned down, when they approached to Government to seek funding to fix the deteriorating road condition.
With the road eventually becoming impassable, the residents decided to take the lead to raise funds to undertake the work over a three-month period.
“When the river overflows, the road gets flooded and completely cut off leaving us no access to our homes because it’s too unsafe for us to cross over,” said a resident.
For three months, Alafua Uta residents tried to fix the road but to no avail as the nearby river continued to change its course. Consequently, over 30 families came together and agreed that each family contributes five bags of cement, steel, wire mesh panels, and hard cash.
“If we look at this project, it cost around $10,000 but that’s just for now while we await further assistance from the Government.
“We’ve already referred our requests so hopefully they respond soon,” said Mr. Une.
