It’s the season to be thankful

This is the season to be jolly.

For Niutolo Fa’amausili, from the village of Malie, this is also a season to be thankful for a great year.

Aged 74, Niutolo was spotted cleaning up her piece of land. She says that the villagers are all working together to make the village a little more attractive and clean.

And as she works, she thought back to an eventful year and explains how thankful she is for life.

“Just as you pulled in, I was thinking about how thankful I am this year,” Niutolo told the Village Voice.

“I am thankful to the Lord for giving the strength and blessings to many of the people in this village as we get closer to the end of the last month of this year.

“The one thing I have learnt this year is the importance of unity. It doesn’t matter what task a person has, as long as you work together and make sure you end the year doing all you need to do.”

With her house located on the roadside, Niutolo says that cleaning up her piece of land is her way of keeping everything beautiful for people driving and for events the village has planned this week.

“The village is planning to host some events this week so right now I am just cleaning up my piece of land and making it look beautiful,” she said.

“This is something that my village does every year. For us mothers, we don’t just clean up the living space; our duty is to also take care of everything our families need.

“This is just a thing we do as a village; we take care and keep our village beautiful as well as our houses. It’s a great way to end off the year and many of us enjoy it greatly.”

And with everyone doing their part by cleaning up their own lands, the end result will give those travelling to and from the airport a great first and last impression.

“Like I said before, unity is very important,” Niutolo said.

“If everyone does their part in the village then we will end up with a very attractive village. Like many in the village, I came early in the morning to start my work.

“We all try to finish as much as we can before the sun gets too hot. In a few moments, I will be taking a break but as you can see, I have been productive today.”

And as a last message for the rest of Samoa this Christmas, Niutolo says to keep safe and stay happy.

“My message for Samoa in this holiday season is that the joy of your family members is very important,” Niutolo said.

“Don’t muck around too much in case someone gets hurt. Just stay home with your loved ones and enjoy your Christmas safely.”
