They are not the first couple to fly to Samoa to celebrate a birthday and will not be the last.

Auckland couple Malcom and Kathy Stewart have never been Samoa and if it was not for Malcolm turning 60 recently, they would not be here.

They flew into the country on Monday night and are currently soaking in Samoa’s sunny and beautiful weather at the Taumeasina Island Resort.

Kathy told Dear Tourist that she wanted to make Malcolm’s birthday special and planned to surprise him.

“He had no idea where we were going until we actually check in. I went through a list of places that we have never been, and I wanted to go somewhere totally different.

“We never even talked about coming to Samoa and I’ve got a friend who is married to Samoan. She has talked about it, and it sounded really cool, so I thought to check it out,” she said.

It it was not for Malcolm’s birthday they would both be back in Auckland working, according to Kathy. But having spent over a day in Samoa, they both mentioned how surprise they have been at the hospitality.

“So far the surprise is lovely,” Malcom said

The couple plan on visiting Samoa’s tourist attractions for the rest of their week’s stay.

“Today we plan on staying at the hotel, have a massage later and dinner, “he added.

While the couple are yet to get out and about to explore more of the island, the hospitality and friendliness of the people continues to amaze them.

In fact they feel so welcome that they intend to bring their whole family with them the next time they visit Samoa.

“We did go with our family to Fiji in August and we might bring the family here.”
