As dawn broke early Saturday morning, the Samoa Women in Sports Commission kicked off its Digicel’s Extraordinary Sports Women Challenge. The challengers met at Marist Brothers field Mulivai to run their 5km and have a go at shot put. 

There was a noticeable nervous energy as some of the challengers pondered aloud their ability to complete the 5 kilometer run. 

The vibrant group of juniors and open division encouraged each other and strategized how they would collectively get through the run. 

After a lap around the large field, the group headed out the gate with a Police escort and Red Cross brought up the rear to keep an eye on the ladies.

Gabrielle Apelu recorded the fastest time for the Open division of 27 minutes 57 seconds and Victoria Lalomilo clocked in at 30 minutes 57 seconds for the juniors. All the challengers were pumped on completion of the run.  Some had  to dig deep to stay ahead of the pursuit teams on the last dash to finish.

The shot put session was full of laughter given that most had never tried shot put before. The group were in such high spirits pushing each other along during their 3 attempts.Results of the shotput for the open division: Gabrielle Apelu (9.02 mtrs), Asofaga Snow (8.02mtrs) and Manamea Schwalger with 7.79 mtrs. The juniors: Victoria Lalomilo (8mtrs); Letava Thompson (7.66 mtrs) and Saleaumua Valasi Vili with 7.1 mtres.

All the challengers will collect points from these two events. This week will see them trying their hands at lawn bowls.
