A bodybuilder from Samoa is the new Mr. American Samoa.

Peniamina Matale-Fili, 21, of the Bodybuilding Federation of Samoa, was crowned the Mr. American Samoa Overall Bodybuilding 2018 during the weekend.

This marks another successful achievement of the Bodybuilding Federation of Samoa.

The competition is a partnership between the American Samoa Mr. Sau Ia International Bodybuilding Federation and the Bodybuilding Federation of Samoa.

Matale-Fili is the son of Siuli Petaia and Petaia Matale-Fili from the villages of Faleula and Satuiatua and Neiafu in Savai’i.

For Matale-Fili, this is his second time competing in the bodybuilding competition.

“Competing in the American Samoa, Mr. Sau Ia Bodybuilding Competition is my second Bodybuilding competition.”

“The first time I ever competed in bodybuilding was last year November during the Mr. Samoa Bodybuilding competition.”

“I won the junior division and I was fortunate to claim the second place overall behind the current Mr. Samoa John Lemoa.”

Mr. Matale-Fili stated his career began from his daily routines at home.

He later joined the fun at Joe’s Gym, and that’s where the door opened up for him, competing for the Bodybuilding Federation of Samoa started off.

“It all started at home with workouts at home after work and my daily routine at home.”

“And I have also learned the difficulty of being fat and how vulnerable we are to non-communicable diseases, so it was all about staying fit and living healthy.”

“It was then that I started joining the Joe’s Gym’s Bodybuilding team and that was basically how I got exposed here and competed for Bodybuilding Competitions.”

Mr. Matale-Fili says it took him a whole year preparing for his first bodybuilding competition, and two months for the American Samoa Title.

He also mentioned that he has been working and learning so much from the current Mr. Samoa Mr. John Lemoa through his preparations.

“It took me one whole full year to prepare for my first ever tournament last year in terms of trainings and also my diet.”

“I have been working and also learning a lot from my brother, John Lemoa, in training me to be the kind of bodybuilder that I am right now.”

“All that work we put through without Johan Keil our trainer and sponsor, made us be in this position that we are today.”

Mr. Matale-Fili is excited and proud of his achievement; especially winning a competition on international stage.

He mentioned that it’s a dream come true for him but he also believes this is an exciting start of a new chapter of his life.

“I am very excited and proud representing Samoa and my family on this level and the result I have achieved.”

“It’s a dream come true but also this will be the start of great thing ahead of me and my career as a bodybuilder for Samoa.”

Mr. Matale-Fili also added that he is now eyeing Oceania bodybuilding competitions.

“I really want to compete in an Oceania competition after winning the American Title, and for me to do that is to put more effort in my trainings.”

“I want to compete against the best in the Pacific and I am dreaming of representing Samoa through Bodybuilding in International Arena.”
