The government is putting more effort into trade links with Australia through the introduction of a new role to help facilitate not just increased trade but also investment opportunities at the Samoa Consulate in Liverpool.

Henry Tunupopo is focusing on establishing his office and building key partnerships that will achieve the purpose of trade and investment opportunities for Samoa.

The focus of the role is to effectively engage and coordinate trade promotion and facilitate trade related activities in the interests of Samoa in Australia, based on Samoa’s economic and trade policy priorities and direction.

It is hoped that with the new role, Samoan exporters and businesses in the Australian market, or that have potential business relations in Australia can tap into this expertise for market information, connect to potential buyers, or any other trade related queries.

The Samoan business communities that may be interested in a supplier of a product from Samoa or in information related to requirements of setting up a business in Samoa are encouraged to call into the Consulate.

There is also a display of Made in Samoa products available at the Consulate for people interested in our exports, or what else is available from Samoa.

Since the role began, Mr. Tunupopo has established relations with the Pacific Islands Trade and Invest Office in Sydney who have an extensive profile in working with Samoan businesses and products over the years.

“This relationship is beneficial for our Samoan businesses in that there is this added support tailored just for Samoan businesses and to deal with their issues in the market here in Australia, as well as supply constraints in Samoa,” Hinauri Petana, Samoa’s High Commissioner to Australia.

Samoan workers under the Government of Australia’s Seasonal Workers Program will also fall under this role, where monitoring visits and assistance will be made available.

In Samoa’s High Commission in Canberra, Ms. Rona Meleisea Chewlitt, Deputy Head of Mission began work before Christmas replacing Counsellor Mr. Fata Brian Kaio who has served for some time.

Ms. Chewlitt also comes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Samoa, and has extensive experience from the Political, International Relations and Protocol Division of the Ministry.
