A mother’s Christmas wish

How often do people get what they wish for during Christmas?

While some do, others like 79-year-old Loua Paulo from Nofoali’i, she can only hope that her Christmas will bring more joy over her family’s daily struggles.

“My wish for this Christmas is to see lots of presents and in addition to that, some money to help out with some of our Christmas preparations,” she told the Village Voice team.

“As for our family I don’t see that will happen.”

Ms. Loua has four children, one passed away, the other one lives in American Samoa and the other two live with her at their home.

“Only few more days than we celebrate the birth of our Jesus Christ and families are getting together and there will be a lot of gifts exchanging.

“Life is very difficult and expensive when you compare it with the past when goods were cheaper.

“Our family relies so much on our plantation.

“With what we are able to sell, that is how much we earn and we’re able to put food on the table to feed our family. Not forgetting that we do have church and village obligations as well.

“Our family also relies on rainwater. It has been years and as we are still waiting for S.W.A. to connect our water.”

Despite her family’s ordeals, Ms. Loua wishes everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
