Minister issues safety assurance

The Minister of Public Enterprises, Lautafi Fio Purcell, has assured members of the public that the Accident Compensation Corporation (A.C.C) building is safe.

The assurance follows some incidents where tenants of the building in the heart of Apia have had to be evacuated as a result of an electrical fault.

“The Chief Executive Officer (of A.C.C) has already contacted me that the building is now safe,” Lautafi said.

The Minister added that safety is paramount and it is why they needed to evacuate people when it was necessary. The Minister said the problem was an issue with the generator.

“The E.P.C. is now working on fixing the problem with the generator because that’s where it all started,” said Lautafi.

“I can confirm that is working smoothly now but the A.C.C. is still monitoring the situation for the safety of everyone.”

The first time the issue surfaced was on Monday 4 September.

Business was disrupted and workers in the building had to leave their workstations for a period of time.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (M.C.I.L) declared a day off on that Monday.

The Ministry of Commerce left a note on their main entrance to inform members of the public about what was happening.

“Due to the power outage, M.C.I.L wishes to advise the public that its office will be closed on Monday 4th September 2017 and will re-open for usual business on Tuesday 5th September at 9.00am,” the notice reads.

The problem returned last Tuesday where tenants and members of the public had to be evacuated again.
