Challenge shines spotlight on Samoa’s top chefs

Those who slave away in the kitchen of a fancy restaurant are often the unsung heroes of any establishment.

If you ask anyone, they would not know the name of the chef from their most recent fine dining moment but they will definitely remember the name of the restaurant and the dish they had.

Through our chefs skillful and surgically precise ways of cooking, they are the heart of the workplace, they are the reason guests come back, and yet… they remain unknown to most.

This fact alone gives great significance to the annual restaurant challenge with this years event ending on Thursday at the New Zealand High Commission residence in Letava.

The initiative by the New Zealand High Commission gave the much needed spotlight to the hardworking chefs of Samoa and the serving staff… it was their time to shine and to show Samoa just how far their creativity and imagination can go.

Between the 5th and the 15th of August, participating restaurants put up new dishes for judging; the dishes had to fuse together both NZ and Samoan ingredients.

There were awards for different categories with the overall winner award claimed by Saletoga Sand Resort.

Different category winners were awarded bottles of wine, coconut cooking oil, cash prizes, vouchers and a Tanoa Trophy.

But the best prize of them all (aside from bragging rights) the chefs got to show their skills in the kitchen to everyone in Samoa.

Awards:

Overall Winner: Saletoga Sand Resort

Best New Entrants: Legends Café and

Amoa Resort

Best Service: Seabreeze Resort

Best Innovative and Skill: Roko’s Restaurant
