Unemployment is a big problem for Samoa.

And it doesn’t just affect men. Many mothers are desperate for jobs so they too can contribute to the welfare of their families financially.

Aiga Malama, 47, is among many mothers looking for jobs.

She said she was working as a housemaid for a family at Lotopa until she became sick and the family decided to hire another person.

“It’s not like those jobs which pay a lot but it was still a steady source of income,” she said. “It’s also all the way in town so sometimes I would have to sleep at my husband’s siblings house in town.

“I have no other choice because sometimes I can’t afford transportation.

“All of the money goes to taking care of the family and even the bills.”

Aiga said she used to earn$120 a week.

“Sometimes I work over night and even public holidays but the pay is still the same,” she said.

“By the time we get to the beginning of the week, there is nothing left because there are too many things that need money. The money is just not enough.”

Now Aiga is keen for another job. With three growing children, she said finances is one of their biggest struggles.

“To be honest I get stressed when I am unable to provide for my family.

“Sometimes I even borrow, beg and do whatever I need to do for my kids to go to school.”

Agia said she is great at housekeeping and she is confident about her cooking skills.
