Medal policy by government - wrong

Dear Editor

Re: P.M. Tuilaepa rejects call

I disagree with the P.M. here.

An Olympic medal of any colour is on such a higher level of prestige than a Commonwealth Games medal.

This is because the level of competition in the Olympics is so much greater. Especially in the sport of Weightlifting where the medal winning countries are those countries that do not participate in the Commonwealth Games - especially the former Soviet bloc countries (where drugs in sport was so rampant for so many years).

No, this is a wrong-headed policy by the government.

This Olympic silver medal deserves a huge financial reward because Ele Opeloge is the only Samoan that has ever got anywhere near the heights of Mount Everest.

Winning a Commonwealth gold medal is also a great achievement but that can only compare to climbing Aoraki Mt Cook in New Zealand.

It is nowhere near the same level as climbing Mt Everest.

Ele Opeloge’s silver medal is the highest any Samoan athlete has got in any field of sport.

The rugby 7s world series win does not compare although that is a credible second.
