Charges against former lecturer dismissed

Charges against former National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) lecturer, Christopher Gounder, were dismissed and withdrawn yesterday. 

The decision was handed down by His Honour, Chief Justice Patu Tiavasue Falefatu Sapolu during the criminal mention hearing.

Prosecution Rexona Titi from the Attorney General's Office tendered a death certificate to Court as proof that Mr. Gounder had passed away.

Chief Justice Patu then made a decision.      

"The Court received proof that the defendant has passed away," he said.

"Therefore all charges against the defendant is withdrawn and dismissed."

Last year, Mr. Gounder revealed his plan to set up a third university in Samoa with the aim to promote quality education. Mr. Gounder is Indo-Fijian.

In the meantime, the Samoa Police Service urges the public who are in similar situations to seek help through the N.G.O. – Fa’ataua le Ola on Telephone 30609.

“We want to advice members of the public or individuals who are in similar situations that you are not alone,” says the statement. 

“If you are feeling depressed and is contemplating suicide, please call for help. Seek help from your friends, church ministers or family member.”
