The Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.) grassroots development programme concluded on Tuesday last week.

Held at the Marist Brothers School, Mulivai grounds, the programme offered an opportunity to all young rugby players from all ages to learn more about the basics of rugby.

According to Samoa Rugby Union G.I.R. Coordinator, Filoi Eneliko, the main objective and aim of this development programme is to ensure young rugby players get to learn all the rugby basics before taking on the field.

She also believes this is the initiative to equip the young talented players with the right skill sets to play the game of rugby.

“This programme started from kids aged five up to 18 years for both boys and girls who are interested in rugby.”

“This grassroots programme from the Samoa Rugby Union is for the young players in the grassroots level to learn more about the basics of the game, holding the ball, how to pass, and the entire basic rugby skills.”

Eneliko added this is the third year that the S.R.U. has invested in this programme and the feedback has been positive from kids playing in the secondary schools competition.

She says the benefit of the programme can be seen in how the school students are playing the game in the secondary schools rugby competitions.

“Most of the kids playing for the Secondary Schools National Rugby Championships have undergone this programme and they have developed the right skills to play the sport.”
