A HARD WORKING FATHER: Samasoni Samasoni.

Life might be full of challenges but it’s how we respond to them that defines the future.

Samasoni Samasoni, 44-years old from Falelauniu, firmly believes if we let the struggles get the better of us, we will not go far.

When the Village Voice caught up with him, he was making his way down the road, selling popcorns to get some money for his family’s toonai today.

Samasoni is a father of three.

He works at one of the shops in Vaitele but on Saturdays, he sells popcorns for some extra money.

But it’s money that is quickly drained.

“Schools fees, water and electricity bills every two weeks,” he said. “Then we have the church and village obligations and food every day. Money just disappears.”

“That’s why I end up selling popcorns just on Saturdays to get money for Sunday. The money I receive from work is for our family’s needs during the week.”

On good days, he can make up to $80 from selling popcorns.

“The cost of living is too high but all we can do is work hard.”

For Samasoni, he sees it as an obligation.

“I’m the head of my family,” he said. “I’m not just going to sit around and do nothing, I have to work hard so that I can provide for my family in every way I can.”
