Samoa’s youth paddle into their future

19 February 2016, 12:00AM

A new programme introducing Samoa’s children to paddling continues this Saturday at the Nafanua Paddling Club, which is located at Matautu-tai.

This is the second week of the ongoing Junior Paddling programme, which is held on Saturdays from 9am to 11.00am.

The programme targets girls and boys, aged 6 – 16 years old.

A free programme, it promises to be lots of fun for the children, as well as providing health benefits that come from being active outdoors.

Most importantly, the junior paddlers will learn:

• water safety and how to behave around water;

• to be familiar and comfortable being in the water;

• basic paddling skills, such as how to get in the boat, how to hold a paddle, and how to paddle.

Nafanua Outrigger Canoe Club’s President, Mamea Samuel Ieremia, said “Community is such a strong part of what Samoa is founded on and paddling is an important part of Samoa’s culture and history”.

 “We are in a privileged position to be able to continue fostering the cultural connection the ocean has with the Samoan people,” Mamea continued.

 “It’s also important that we raise awareness and care for the ocean, by teaching our children how important the ocean is to our environment and to Samoa”.

Interested members of the public can register in the programme by contacting Nafanua President Mamea Samuel Ieremia or Nafanua Secretary Sisi Mahealani or come on down to the Nafanua Outrigger Canoe Club, located at Matautu-Tai, at 9am Saturday 20th February 2016.

Life jackets will be provided for all children participating in the programme, and parents are advised to accompany their children.
