Kesepi Vincent Meredith Talisau has only completed Year 13 at Avele College but has his eyes set on Samoa’s tourism sector.

The graduate—who was runner-up to the college dux this year—excelled academically and came top in health and physical education, food and textile technology and was overall the top student in applied science.

Talking about his academic results with the Samoa Observer, he said he was surprised when he was called up as the runner-up to the dux of the college.

“It surprised me when I was called out as the second to dux for Year 13 this year and with that I just want to thank God for helping me fight my battles,” he said.

Mr. Talisau is the son of Talisau and Stella from the villages of Vaivase, Leulumoega, Lotofaga and Sapapali’i in Savai’i.

Dedicating his achievements to his parents, extended family and close friends, he said he would not have gone that far without their support.

Avele College and its teachers will be remembered for steering him onto the right path, according to Mr. Talisau.

“I entered Avele College since 2015 I was encouraged and motivated by most teachers that there is so much potential in me.

“I felt so loved and comfortable in Avele’s compound and to this year I believe I will be leaving with so much to cherish,” he said.

But the journey up to his graduation from college was not easy, added the graduate.

“My father is the only source of income in our family. Mum resigned from work since the birth of my two-year-old sister. There was a great need for income for us because dad’s pay was not enough to cater for all eight of us, especially for our school and family needs,” he said.

While other top-performing students in other schools and colleges focused on other professions, Mr. Talisau has his eyes firmly set on Samoa’s tourism sector.

“Tourism industry provides job opportunity to a lot of people, and also to those who cannot find themselves in big office and all that. This reduces the level of unemployment in our country, which is one main reason I want to establish one of my own,” he added.
