A delegation from Kelston Boys High School in Auckland is in Samoa.

Led by the school’s International Student Manager, Susan Mitchell, they are here as part of the Kelston Boys High Sports Scholarship Recruitment Programme to scout for potential students.

Mitchell is accompanied by former Manu Samoa halfback, John Senio, who is a staff member as well as former Kiwi league star, Duane Mann.

Since last Friday, the group has been holding meetings with students and parents to discuss the possibilities.

Today, the school is hosting three international Samoan students.  They are AJ Sagaga, of Pesega College, Sipaia Fetu, of Samoa College and Eteuati Solomona, of Samoa College.

“They’ve had a great year,” said Mitchell.

“AJ and Sapaia made the 1st XV rugby team, so that was good. Eteuati played TC and was a triallist for the Auckland West Rugby so his rugby is very good.

“AJ also got into an Auckland B team which is outstanding because it’s his first season in Auckland.  They’ve all done really well with sporting.

“Academically, they’ve all just handling the classes really well.  They’ve all gained as many credits as they need to pass Level 2.  We’re just so happy with them.”

Mitchell said their mission in Samoa is to find more similar students to offer them opportunities not only in the sporting arena but to also help them with their academic results.

“We’re a unique school,” she said.

“We’re about eighty per cent Pacific Islands so we know how to look after the boys.  We’ve got a roll of about 800 and about 280 are Samoan students. We have eight staff members who are Samoan so there’s definitely plenty of support for the boys.”

Among the staff members are former Manu Samoa players Siaosi Vaili and John Senio.
