Lessons learned in Samoa

Live, love and laugh is how Ian Firth and Kan Koon describe the way of living in Samoa during their week-long holiday.

Both from the land of the Kiwi in New Zealand, they told Dear Tourist that this is their last day in Samoa.

“I actually work with some Samoans back home,” Mr. Firth said.

“We picked here first of all for the weather, because we wanted to get away for a while from the cold winter.

“Secondly, we wanted to go to a place where we could relax and it’s warmer.

“We knew it was a lot more laid back than Raro and Fiji.

“And, there would be more natural things to see here and more green and fresh air and more pictures to take.

“We are actually staying at the Sheraton Resort but we just came to the Sheraton in Apia to check it out and see what the differences are between the two.

“We have been here for a week and we actually leave today.

“We enjoyed the trip even though it was short but we managed to tour around Upolu and also fitted in a visit to Savaii.”

Mr. Koon said despite the recent rain,  they really enjoyed their visit.

“It was really good, despite the weather in the last couple of days we enjoyed every bit of it,” said Mr. Koon.

“During our stay we had some taro and other local food, however at the resort, it was a bit limited for that because it’s so far away and that was a problem.

“So it was a bit disappointing that way because of the distance and there’s a lot more things found in Apia than at the resort, but that didn’t stopped us from enjoying our trip.

“One thing exciting we did was we took a bus ride and that was amazing! So different from the buses back home.

“It was great and we were enjoying it and most especially the people.”

Mr. Firth said one thing for sure they will be taking home is the friendliness and kindness of the people of Samoa.

“The people are always willing to help. I’m familiar with their ways because I have so many Samoan colleagues and that’s what they do,” he said.

“That was the other main reason we decided to come here, because we wanted to see the birth place of these wonderful people.

“Life is so much easier here, even though we know that some people struggle, they always smile and live with what they have.

“It is also a lesson learnt for us that we ought to appreciate all the little things and thank God for the gift of life.

“Samoa has taught us that, and for the past week, I have learned a very valuable lesson from this trip and that is to enjoy life to the fullest, despite the problems and the busy life.”
