A young man from the village of Satapuala has died after he attempted to commit suicide on Mother’s Day Sunday.

This was confirmed by Police Spokesperson, Sua Tiumalu.

“He was taken to Leulumoega hospital on Sunday and he later died,” said Su’a.

“The police and the Coroner are satisfied that the cause of death was suicide.”

Su’a said the incident was reported to the Police Station at Satapuala for investigation on Sunday.

In another Police matter, a 27-year-old male faces two charges in relation to a hit-and-run incident at Aele on Sunday.

This was confirmed by Police Spokesperson, Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu.

“The man is facing charges of negligent driving causing death and being an unlicensed driver,” said Su’a.

“He will appear in Court on the 23rd this month.

Twenty-eight-year-old, Popese Sipuni, 28, was sitting with a friend on the side of the road when he was struck by a speeding vehicle.

A family member related the chain of events leading up to Sunday’s incident.

“His friend had a lucky escape but Popese did not,” she said.

“He was hit and was taken to the hospital but he died upon arrival at the hospital.”

The family member said alcohol was involved.

“The driver of the vehicle was really drunk and so were his other two friends.”

A senior official at the National Health Services told the Samoa Observer that Mr. Sipuni died from serious head and chest injuries.

“What we’ve heard is that he was killed in a hit and run by a suspected drunk driver on Sunday morning,” the official said.
