Apia Maroons rules in women’s rugby 7s

The Aana Blues Women’s Rugby team was the crowned champions of the final leg of the National Women’s Sevens series 2018.

Held at the Samusu Primary School last week Saturday, Aana Blues overcame Apia Maroons 17-7 at fulltime.

But the day belonged to overall series champions, Apia Maroons women’s team, who were consistent throughout the three rounds series appearing in all three finals, winning one and losing two, which was still enough to stay on top of the series standings. 

Apia Maroons Women’s Rugby team came off short losing to Warriors team during the final of the first leg of the National Women’s Sevens series in Apia Park, while scooping the second leg at Leulumoega Fou College field’s first prize defeating Lupe ole Soaga.

Warriors Women’s Rugby team is sitting at second place in just six points of 54 behind Apia Maroon Women’s Rugby team topping at 60 points, Aana Blues Women’s team in third place of 52 points, and Tiavea Women’s Rugby team in fourth place of 42 points overall.

According to Samoa Rugby Union Women’s Development Officer, Avi’i Fa’alupega, from the tournament so far she has witnessed the growing momentum of women’s rugby in Samoa.

She also mentioned that there has been progress in terms of the players’ skills and their physicality.

“I have seen a massive momentum of women’s rugby in Samoa because of the great support from parents and the community.”

“This is the key objective of running these tournaments.”

Saelua Seleti of the Apia Maroons Women’s team also won the player of the tournament last weekend at Samusu.
