The aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Gita has left a family of Samusu, Aleipata, in need of a water tank.

Tiatia Faamanu Tiatia, a father of seven, says there are so many things they need, but a water tank is the most pressing need they have.

Mr. Tiatia shared that they have been waiting for a water tank for so long, and still nothing.

“We have been waiting for the ongoing projects that we had, but unfortunately there is still nothing. We have a problem with our water supply here in our area,” said the 39-year-old.

“This time that we are in after the T.C. Gita everything has been ruined in terms of our plantation, things that we rely on for consumption and source of income has been ruined.”

“Even though we are living far away from the rivers and sea, T.C. Gita has definitely brought famine to our family,” he shared with the Village Voice team.

One of the biggest issues he faces is fixing his home, especially when the recent strong winds destroyed their outdoor bathroom.

“The roof of our house has been affected as well. We have to place heavy rocks on it to hold it down and clothes on the side to block the water from entering our home.”

He says communication is now even harder with the cyclone affecting the network and electricity.

Being the only working arm to support a family of 10 is not easy, he shared.

Mr. Tiatia says he has five children who attend school and an elderly who lives with them.

He makes $50 per week, but it is never enough to provide for his family and fix his house.

“My wife makes chips and lets the kids sell it and I drive a taxi. $300 for the turn in of the taxi but for a week, I only receive $50. It is only when I have certain tourists to drive around and then that is when my pay will reach $100 and that is on a rare occasion.”

“My mother-in-law lives with us. She has got high blood pressure and diabetes, she needs medical attention. She has her daily check-ups on Monday.”

“The food which we make for her must be healthy and good due to her illness, which is expensive,” he added.
