Samoa Hockey Federation has announced its intake for the Hockey Elites Programme 2017.

As a result of the Samoa Games 2016 in Savai’i, Samoa Hockey has for the first time identified elite hockey players from the big island.

Hockey is now preparing its first ever Malietoa Tanumafili II Inter-Island Hockey Cup on Saturday 18 February 2017 at Sapapalii Primary School, Sapapalii where the Gold and Silver Medallist winners from the Samoa Games in Savaii and Upolu will compete to start selecting a truly Samoa National Hockey team to represent Samoa at the forthcoming Oceania Cup and World League later on this year.

Samoa Hockey is also taking a Juniors team to compete with Sapapali’i Primary School, the youngest team that was competing at the Samoa Games 2016 in Savaii.

The raw talent seen in Savaii during the Samoa Games 2016 has been most encouraging for Samoa Hockey Federation and it will now satisfy its selectors of including Savaii hockey players when selecting Samoa National teams in the future.

In preparing for the Samoa Games 2016, Samoa co-jointly visited schools in Upolu and Savaii with the Mudgee Hockey team from Australia in 2016 to introduce hockey in rural areas as part of Samoa Hockey’s strategic plan 2017-2020 to introduce hockey to the whole of Samoa especially in rural areas and at grass root level.

Meanwhile Samoa Hockey is planning its National Annual competition which runs from February until November each year.
