Advancing the fight against deadly cancer

The Samoa Cancer Society recently received donations of $1,000 and $600 from Team Happy Feet and Crossfit Fatu Toa respectively.

Team Happy Feet is a group of friends who have been together for the last 4 years and participate in the annual Samoa Perimeter Relay hosted by Samoa Events.

This year, Team Happy Feet decided to ‘run for a cause’ and chose the Society as their charity of choice.

Michael Rasmussen, the spokesperson of the team, said they wanted to help.

“We wanted to help the society with its cause and the good work that you continue to do,” he said.

“We understand the difficulties and we appreciate all that you do.”

In response, Shelley Burich, Executive Officer of the Society, expressed her deep gratitude for the kind donation and congratulated the team for making the commitment – not only in raising awareness about cancer, but for also committing to choosing the healthy and active lifestyle  by participating in the Relay.

Crossfit Fatu Toa raised $600 from their recent Movember challenge with members of their Crossfit team competing for the title of ‘Best Mo Bro’ – the best moustache of the month.

Movember raises awareness about men’s health issues and prostate cancer and by participating in the moustache challenge, the Crossfit team helped create conversation and awareness on these two important issues.

Ms. Burich reiterated her sentiments to both groups.

“How overwhelming it has been this year with the amount of support and assistance that has been given towards the cause of the Samoa Cancer Society,” she said.

“All support, whether it is large or small, voluntary or monetary...contributes to the work that we do and enables us to accomplish the goals that we have set in helping the fight against cancer in Samoa.

“Fitness firms, teams and individuals can all help in the fight against cancer and N.C.Ds by continuing on with these types of cancer awareness activities.

“Choosing a healthy and active lifestyle is the first step towards fighting cancer and N.C.D.s and by creating awareness, you help to start the conversation about cancer and the risk factors.

EARLY DETECTION is the key!  VAVE iloa, VAVE vaai le fomai, VAVE vili mai – ph: 23984.”
