The Samoa Hockey Team both mens and women’s teams won silver medals at the Oceania Intercontinental Hockey 5s tournament.

Coach Peta Teo was very proud of the team’s effort.

According to a press release from the Samoa Hockey Association the Oceania Cup hockey tournament was held in Sydney, Australia, from Wednesday to Sunday this week.  The 11 a side competition involved Australia, New Zealand and PNG.

“The Oceania Intercontinental Hockey 5s is a new format for international hockey, and proved very popular with spectators and players.  It is played on a half sized field with boards on the sides and is very fast paced with higher scores”.

Several countries within the Pacific participated in the tournament.

“The participating nations were Vanuatu (men only), Fiji (women only), Tonga, Solomon Islands and Samoa. Australia Country played as an invitational team”.

Samoa women’s team went up against Fiji women’s team during the final while our men’s team went up against Vanuatu team.

“The gold medal match in the women’s competition was between Fiji and Samoa, with Fiji winning 5-2.  The men’s was between Vanuatu and Samoa, with Vanuatu winning 10-1”.

According to the Samoa Hockey Association this has been the best ever result for the Samoa Hockey team itself.

“The silver medal placing was the best ever result for Samoa at an Oceania Cup tournament”.

“The result is even more remarkable considering Vanuatu and Fiji both has artificial turf fields to train on, while Samoa plays on grass fields which are very different”.

“The Samoan players showed a very high level of hockey skills and a huge amount of heart and determination through the tournament”.

“They impressed spectators and officials alike”, according to Samoa Hockey media.
