Fuimaono’s appointment a popular choice

17 September 2017, 12:00AM

Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua has been reappointed to coach the Manu Samoa. He replaces Namulauulu Alama Ieremia who resigned last month after the team’s losing record in the past year. What do you think of the appointment? Do you think Fuimaono is the right man or has the Samoa Rugby Union got this wrong again? Ulimasao Fata asked people in today’s Street Talk and this is what they said:

Semi Uisa, 40,

They’ve made the right decision. I don’t know why they didn’t pick him earlier. He is very underrated but he has done a lot of good for Samoan rugby. He started the revival of the Sevens programme and I think he can do the same with our Manu Samoa’s sagging fortunes. Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua is a veteran of Rugby in Samoa given his services as a player and a coach. Not only does he have the experience and the knowledge of running the team but also the hearts of Samoa when the team is not performing well in their games.

I am happy about the decision and I also support the decision based on his experience and his results. He is a winning coach and I just hope he picks more local players because I believe there is so much talent here in Samoa now.

Junior Stanley, 29,

I am very excited. I fully support the re-appointing of Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua as the new Head Coach for Manu Samoa. The main reason that he’s a local Coach and he fully understands the situation here in Samoa and its development. Another reason why I support Fuimaono is that he can overcome the language barrier with the players. He’s a veteran of Samoan rugby and although he made some mistakes in the past, he would have learnt from them.

It’s the right decision. I trust the Samoa Rugby Union with their decision of appointing Fuimaono Titimaea Tafua as the new Head Coach. I know there is a reason why they appointed him. I just hope he finds a good team to work with and that he will be able to break Samoa’s losing streak of late. It has been very sad to watch the Manu Samoa. They need to have that passion  back about playing for their people and country.

Uaine Visesio, 35,

Manono

I think the decision by the Samoa Rugby Union is definitely a good decision. Titimaea is not new to the job and if we remember the transformation he brought to Sevens side back in 2007, it speaks a lot about what he can do. At the stage where we are desperate to qualify for the World Cup, I think Fuimaono should bring back the old methods and tough love to whip the Manu Samoa into form.

Saili Tulimasealii, 51,

Utualii

I think someone else should have been given the job. I have nothing against Fuimaono but he has had his chance. My view is based on the fact that Fuimaono was also in charge of the Manu Samoa back in 2011 but still we didn’t made it to the quarterfinals after all. It’s clear that he was successful in his time but then the game has changed a lot since he was in charge. I was hoping the Samoa Rugby Union would’ve chosen someone else that can get Manu Samoa to the World Cup in Japan 2019. Our team right now is desperate to qualify for the World Cup and we just need someone fresh with new ideas to take us to the World Cup.
