Issues with Fuimaono

Re: Chairman backs Fuimaono’s return

1. I like Fuimaono, but he was bought back to save the 7s team and it failed. He was sacked for the British guy. Similar reasons were advanced when he was reappointed.

2. The language issue is a poor argument against overseas coaches. Many of the overseas-based Manu Samoa players do not speak Samoan or cannot understand Samoan to even a conversational level.

In fact, they need to have tactics explained to them in English most of the time. So how are they are going to understand a Samoan speaking coach (yes he can speak English but Samoan is his main language)? In reality, language is not really an issue as English-speaking coaches usually have Samoan speaking assistants or senior players to explain things to the Samoan speaking players.

3. Fuimaono in 2011 had Tom Coventry and Aussie McLean as assistant coaches. Two very highly qualified coaches who were the technical brains of the operation. Especially in defensive systems and set piece play. Who will be Fuimaono’s assistant coaches this time round? Are they new guys without much coaching experience? Just getting old players who were great players in the past doesn’t necessarily mean they will be great technical coaches.
