New Zealand squash team excited

Squash is absolutely addictive, say two kiwi players participating in the Samoa Squash Open.

Over 50 players from Oceania arrived this week to play against each other in three days of squash matches, held at Tuanaimato Squash Complex.

Leah Burrows is a full-time preschool teacher but she still makes time to play squash during the week.

“This is my first time competing internationally, so I’m pretty excited,” she said.

Her decision to participate was somewhat spontaneous.

Ms Burrows learned about the Open in a Facebook post two months ago and decided to enter with a friend.

“Before we knew it the flights were booked, the accommodation was booked and we were here!”

Ms Burrows says the sport is excellent for teaching motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

She often takes her preschool students to her local squash court in Queenstown, New Zealand to have a go at the fast paced, active game.

Also from New Zealand, player Joseph Petelo started playing squash three years ago and hoped it would become a once a week habit.

“Next thing I knew I was playing three, four, even five times a week, and I had decided to get a coach.”

Joseph said back then he had no idea he would want to be in Samoa competing internationally but is having a lot of fun.

Playing against other competitive players is the best way to be challenged and improve, he said.
