Family, friends and relatives of Sister Anne Mary of the Assumption from Tonga and Samoa gathered at the Carmelites Monastery Chapel at Vailima to witness her first profession’s ceremony on Monday.

Archbishop Fr. Alapati Mataeliga conducted the service.

Also present were Fr. Patolo Matiasi, Fr. Penitito Mauga, Fr. Marcus Hazelman and Fr. Antonio Poe who all played a role in the service.

According to Fr. Poao Saena, Parish Priest of Vailima, to become a Carmelite Sister, the process is lengthy and it can take up to more than six years.

Sr. Anne Mary is going through the process.

“The first profession consists of the religious vows in the form of the three evangelical counsels of poverty, obedience and chastity,” he said.

“These vows last for three years. After this period the final vow can be taken- these last for life.”

While the formation period is an extended period of time this is deemed necessary to be sure that the monastery is the right place for the woman, said Fr. Poao Saena.

Sister Anne Sisi’uhila Kiu has been with the Carmelites Sisters for over a year. She resides among thirteen other Sisters in the Carmelites Monastery at Vailima. Sister Anne is now working ahead for her final profession for the next three years.
