Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Government-owned Digital TV.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi made the announcement when he spoke at the 10th anniversary celebration since TV Samoa was privatised, owned and managed by Samoa Quality Broadcasting Corporation. (See story).

In approving the licence for the Digital TV operators, the Prime Minister said that Cabinet took into account a number of factors. These include nationwide television coverage as well as the Digital TV’s access to all free to air and privately owned television stations in the country.

“With the digital platform, every corner of Samoa which does not receive television today will have television.  And the privately owned television station can link to the digital platform to improve their coverage,” said the Prime Minister.

“It will create a level playing field for all television outlets and create a healthy competition environment that should translate to affordable charges for public notices.”

And the affordability of public notices on television is paramount to Cabinet, Tuilaepa reiterated.

He did not provide details and logistics of the Digital TV platform but noted that the Cabinet has given the brainchild five months to deliver the new platform or their licence will be terminated. 

In his prepared remarks, Tuilaepa complimented the first privately owned television station in Samoa, S.Q.B.C.  for its endurance having survived the competitive television industry which has grown from one station to more 8 free to air television outlets locally and internationally.

As the first television in Samoa originally owned by government before it was privatised, the Prime Minister noted that TV1 has never failed to amaze him with their growth, commitment and services to the government and people of Samoa.

“I note with admiration your on-line broadcast via the internet and social media,” he said. “Your initiative has connected Samoa to thousands of relatives overseas and also reaffirms the government’s I.C.T. vision to provide affordable communication access for our people,” he continued. 

“The on-line network is also profiling our country as a tourism destination and also the talents by our young people in sports and entertainment which is highly commendable.

“Rest assured your achievements is duly noted by government

“It speaks volumes and I urge the Board and Management not to be complacent and continue with their ingenuity because your success will lead to more jobs for our people.”
