National Half Marathon boosts Sport tourism

To celebrate Samoa’s 55th Independence Day, Samoa Events is launching the National Half Marathon. 

Yesterday at the press conference at Sheraton Aggie Grey’s Hotel and Bungalows 

Samoa Event Director Seti Afoa announced, “Samoa Events is excited to present Samoa 55th Independence Marathon in partnership with Sheraton Samoa properties on Saturday 3rd of June.”

“Samoa events has for a long time held the Samoa Independence Swim which is from Here at Aggies to Sails in Mulinuu, this year we are adding the marathon.”

The event will consists of a half marathon21km starting at Faleasiu, 10km starting at Faleula Village, 5km starts as  Vaitele and 3km starting at Lepea all finishing at Sheraton Aggie Greys Hotel in town. 

There will be prize money as well spot prizes on the day.  

This is building up to the full marathon which will take place next year from Sheraton Resort in Mulifanua to Apia. 

Samoa Events hosts  a number of events through out the year which see a number of participants from across the globe to test their strength in hot, humid Samoan climate.

“ Samoa Events and Sheraton Samoa are great partners for national events such as this- we have a common goal of presenting exciting and attractive events for our local population and of course for our tourism markets offshore,” Mr. Afoa explained.  

“Next year when we have the full marathon 2018, which will start at Sheraton Resort.  We are really working together to get people from offshore. Especially putting together the celebrations at independence.  We can package all that up for our runners to come from offshore and come and run and witness Independence celebrations . Its definitely a tourism driven initiative.” 

Director of Operations and Marketing at Sheraton Properties, Sherillyn Charles added, “In my role, its very important to get Samoa on the map.  And definitely making people excited to come here and realize we have some global events that are happening.  I’m excited to work together with Samoa Events because its gives us the opportunity to put Samoa on the map.”

“Our key market being Australia and New Zealand and actually have people come across world wide.”

Registration is open now. Entry fees are as follows: $80 Half Marathon,$60 10km, $20 5km, and $5 3km.
