Island cup- Savai’i style
Sagone, Savai’i was the cricket capital of Samoa last Saturday.
Last week, the Samoa International Cricket Association (S.IC.A) hosted the first ever Island Cup in Savai’i.
The Island Cup is a senior cricket competition for men and women catered for the local Savai’i residents in and around the Sagone district.
Residents of Savai’i came out to participate in the tournament and showed great enthusiasm towards the sport. The sweltering heat and lack of equipment didn’t deter the participants from having a blast. The tournament was so well received that the cricket developers are now looking to make this an annual fixture.
This is part of the Association’s initiative to grow the grassroots game of cricket in both Upolu and Savai’i. The Association has held tournament to cater to those of all ages: young and old. Partnering with the Australian Government, the Samoa International Cricket Association has proved their commitment to develop the game in Samoa through hosting tournaments such as this one.
Not only is S.I.C.A. committed to growing the game, but also uses the sport as a catalyst for gender inclusivity as they encourage women of any age to take up the sport. The women’s competition is scheduled to begin on the 22nd of November.
Also, Samoa International Cricket Association will also be hosting an open women’s competition in the Lano district on the 26th of November.
