Tafua Primary School in Savai’i celebrated the official opening of its new school building yesterday.

The reconstruction project was mostly funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects which provided up to US$126,589 to Tafua Primary School Committee. Additional costs were borne by the school itself.

The grant was signed over in January this year and the project included eight classrooms, staff room, a library and a toilet block.

Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta gave a keynote address at the ceremony in Tafua, and stressed Japan’s commitment to funding projects such as this.

“The government of Japan is very keen and committed to supporting the Government of Samoa to achieve its objectives outlined in the Strategy of Development of Samoa (S.D.S) at community and national levels which prioritize education,” he said.

The new classrooms will provide a more conducive learning environment for more than 100 students who are educated there.

Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects provides assistance to non-governmental organizations, primary schools, hospitals and other non-profit associations that have a direct impact on the well-being of communities.

Since the inception of this scheme more than 150 projects have successfully completed and benefitted many Samoan communities with its outcome.
