Michael Foley has vacated the head coach role at the Western Force, leaving his assistant Dave Wessels to take over on a caretaker basis for the last three matches of the Super Rugby season.

The Perth-based club announced Thursday it will begin looking for a new head coach for the 2017 season.

RugbyWA chief executive Mark Sinderberry says "we would have liked to have had more success during this time, but the Western Force also had its most successful season under Michael in 2014."

The Force failed to make the playoffs during Foley's four seasons in charge. It finished in eighth place in 2014 with nine wins and is currently in last place in the Australian conference with two wins in 12 matches.
